On February 15, 2019, the world was introduced to yet another entry into the superhero genre, this time on the streaming giant Netflix. Over the course of the show’s two seasons, The Umbrella Academy has garnered consistent praise for its originality, effects, and acting from its ensemble cast. The series has a bright future as well, with the third season looking to begin production soon. And if you’re an aspiring actor, you should have the casting calls for The Umbrella Academy on your radar.
The Umbrella Academy Series Premise
In the crowded superhero genre of film and television, the premise of The Umbrella Academy manages to stand out. The series starts with 43 women giving birth on the same day. However, mystery surrounds these births as none of the mothers showed any signs of pregnancy before giving birth.
Seven of these children are then adopted by an eccentric billionaire named Sir Reginald Hargreeves, who oddly decides to name them after numbers, one through seven, rather than giving them unique names. Eventually, each of the children is given a name by their robot mother: Luther, Diego, Allison, Klaus, Five, Ben, and Vanya.
Sir Reginald Hargreeves recognizes their powers and turns them into a band of superheroes to fight crime, known as the Umbrella Academy. However, he separates Vanya from the rest of the group as she supposedly doesn’t have powers of her own.
Plot and Critical Reception
The first season plot takes place in the present day, where each member of the Umbrella Academy is nearly 30 years old and has each pursued different paths in life, with Diego choosing to stick to the superhero life. Meanwhile, Allison has found fame as an actress and Vanya has found success as a professional violinist. Luther lives on the moon while Five lives in the future, and Ben has passed away and can only communicate with Klaus, who battles a drug addiction.
The whole group reconvenes for their father’s funeral, including Five, who brings troubling reports of an impending apocalypse as the group tries to uncover the mysteries of their past lives.
Season two makes a dramatic shift, with the group traveling to the 1960s, albeit with each sibling finding themselves in different years. Five must find each sibling and bring the gang together to stop the world from ending.
So far, each season of The Umbrella Academy has received critical acclaim, with season one holding a 75% critic’s rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes while season two climbed to a 90% critic’s rating.
Season 3 and Beyond
With the third season of The Umbrella Academy currently in the works, it’s a good time to look out for auditions to land a background or speaking role. Previous seasons have been produced in and around Toronto, Ontario, so it’s likely the next season will follow suit.
Casting for speaking roles is expected to go through talent agencies, which means you’ll want to find representation. Discovery Spotlight hosts talent showcases and auditions to get you in front of the right talent agents.
